The Syphilis Resurgence: Primary Care Strategies
Length: 1 Hour 12 Minutes


This program will expire and must be completed by 11/15/26.

This session will discuss syphilis screening algorithms, appropriate staging of syphilis or neurosyphilis, and discuss treatment options.

Learning Objectives:
·    Compare and confidently interpret the results of the traditional and reverse syphilis screening algorithms 
·    Appropriately stage a patient with syphilis as primary, secondary, early latent, late latent, or neurosyphilis 
·    Select the appropriate treatment protocol for a syphilis patient depending on staging and accounting for pregnancy and penicillin allergy
·    Propose risk reduction strategies to patients to prevent sexually transmitted infections, including doxy-PEP for syphilis and PrEP for HIV

Accreditation Statement:
The Montana Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 1.25 AOA Category 1-A credit and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Grievance Policy:
All grievances should be in writing and should specify the nature of the grievance.  Initially, all grievances should be directed to the MOMA Executive Director, who will then forward said grievance to the Education & Convention Committee.  All grievances will receive an initial response in writing within 30 days of receipt.  If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response, they can submit a complaint in writing to the Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA at 142 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

 

Donald Grewell, DO

Dr. Grewell is a board certified family physician, in clinical practice from 1988 until 2021, 8 years in private practice and 25 years with the Billings Clinic. He has been part-time faculty of the Montana Family Medicine Residency (MFMR) in Billings, Montana, since 2013, and was the director of Osteopathic education/Osteopathic recognition pathway in this program until 2020. He is a retired Army National guard veteran-8 years enlisted, 4 years as a warrant officer army aviator, then 16 years commissioned and senior flight surgeon, medical company commander, retiring as a LTC. He has been actively involved with the Montana Osteopathic Medical Association (MOMA) for 34 years, including as an officer, CME program director, and, for the last 13 years, as MOMA’s executive director. He has also been involved with the AOA’s house of delegates as a delegate from Montana for many years.

Schooling: M.D.: Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.

Undergraduate: Iowa State University, Ames, IA.

Graduate: Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, master of education in Health Professions.

Residency: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; Internal Medicine Residency, Infectious Diseases Fellowship

Board certification: Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease

Medical interests: Care of people living with HIV and/or identifying as LGBTQ+, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, developing and providing interprofessional medical education for patients, medical providers and the public

Outside interests: Seeking out people, books, music, shows, and outdoor activities that allow me to see or experience life from a different perspective.
