Colon Cancer Screening: What's New in 2023

This presentation will discuss options for colon cancer screening, including pros/cons and reliability. Changes in the incidence and demographics of colon cancer will also be addressed, as well as treatment options.
Learning Objectives:
• Learners will describe changes in the incidence of colon cancer.
• Learners will designate appropriate screening methods given a patient's particular circumstances.
• Learners will formulate a comprehensive treatment and monitoring plan for each patient.
• Learners will develop increased rapport to engage the patient in the decision-making process during their treatment.
• Learners will demonstrate improved diagnosis of early-stage colon cancers to improve patient outcomes.

Matthew Bechtold, MD, AGAF, FACG, FASGE, FASPEN
Dr. Matthew Bechtold is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and Clinical Gastroenterologist practicing general gastroenterology and nutrition at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia School of Medicine. Dr. Bechtold completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Missouri - Columbia & Harry S. Truman Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Dr. Bechtold is board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Despite a busy clinical schedule, Dr. Bechtold has published over 100 articles in outcomes research, nutrition, enteral access, and preventative strategies. He is actively involved in multiple national societies and serves as a member and chair on multiple national committees. He has been a national speaker on gastroenterology, quality improvement, and nutrition topics. He is very passionate about gastrointestinal diseases, nutrition, and quality improvement.
