Type 1 Diabetes and the Adolescent Athlete

Learning Objectives:
•    Learners will accurately describe signs and symptoms of athletes presenting at athletic events and/or outpatient settings with diabetes.
•    Learners will explore the use of current treatment options in the treatment of athletes with diabetes.
•    Learners will develop skills and an understanding of how to treat athletes with diabetes.
•    Learners will improve their understanding and care of diabetes in athletes by using current evaluation and treatment methods and modalities.
•    Learners will improve outcomes in their adolescent patients with diabetes by using current evaluation and treatment methods and modalities.

Accreditation Statement: Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A CME credit(s) and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

Grievance Policy: All grievances should be in writing and should specify the nature of the grievance. If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response, then they can then submit a complaint in writing to the Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA at 142 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

Amie VanMorlan, MD

Dr. Amie Vanmorlan is a Pediatric Endocrinologist who currently practices at the University of Missouri Health Care Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Center at Women's and Children's Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. She is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Child Health, Third Year Clerkship Director, and Fourth Year Course Director at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. VanMorlan is board certified in General Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and in Pediatric Endocrinology by the American Board of Pediatrics/Endocrinology.

Dr. VanMorlan graduated in 2001 with her Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. She completed her residency in General Pediatrics and her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Her research interests include immunology, pediatric developmental disabilities & child development, and pediatric diabetes & metabolism.

Dr. VanMorlan is married and has a 20-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son. She also has a third child named Jade, her German Sheppard. She enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, and baking. She recently became a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
