Alternatives to Opioids for Treating Chronic Pain


In this presentation, Dr. Reed-Cleaver will review chronic pain and the need for new modalities to treat chronic pain other than opioids. She will provide an overview of non-opioid and non-pharmacological treatments to use to treat patients with chronic pain. 

Objectives:

1. Learners will understand the growing concern over the long-term use, potential adverse affects. and risks associated with using opioids for chronic pain management.

2. Learners will identify a range of non-opioid and non-pharmacological treatment options for chronic pain.

3. Learners will evaluate the effectiveness of different non-opioid and non-pharmacological treatment options for chronic pain.

4. Learners will develop strategies for implementing a multimodality approach to chronic pain management that minimizes opioid use.

5. Learners will address the potential for patient resistance to non-opioid pain management strategies and encourage their patients to seek further education and resources on non-opioid pan management strategies.

6. Learners will tailor treatment plans to individual patient needs and preferences and collaborate with a team of healthcare professionals to optimize chronic pain management in their patients.
