Best Practices When Treating Acute Pain to Avoid Abuse


In this presentation, Dr. Zarandy will discuss ideal treatments for healthcare professionals to manage acute pain to avoid abuse of opioid medications. The presentation will highlight the importance of personalized pain management plans, incorporating non-opioid analgesics whenever possible, and carefully assessing patients for risk factors. In addition, the role of patient education, communication, setting realistic expectations, using prescription drug monitoring programs, and staying updated on evolving guidelines to promote safe and effective pain management will be discussed. 

Objectives:

1. Learners will explain the physiological and psychological differences between acute and chronic pain.

2. Learners will better understand the importance of systematic risk assessment for substance abuse by learning about standardized tools and methods for identifying patients at higher risk of substance abuse.

3. Learners will appraise and employ the use of non-opioid alternatives in acute pain management.

4. Learners will grasp the importance of patient education in preventing abuse by applying strategies for clear and effective communication with patients to ensure they understand the risk and benefits of pain medications.

5. Learners will outline specific tools like follow-up appointments, functional assessments, and urine drug testing for monitoring patients to identify and address potential issues promptly for patients that receive opioid therapy. 

6. Learners will implement procedures and policies to collaborate and use an interdisciplinary approach with other healthcare professionals involved in a patient's care.
