In this presentation, physicians will learn how to perform a history and physical exam for abdominal pain.  

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to perform a history and physical exam for abdominal pain.
  • Identify a diagnosis in patients with abdominal pain.
  • Appy treatment to patients with abdominal pain.
  • Recognize and evaluate patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Apply treatment to patients with IBS.

Dr. Matthew Bechtold is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and Clinical Gastroenterologist practicing general gastroenterology and nutrition at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia School of Medicine. Dr. Bechtold completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Missouri - Columbia & Harry S. Truman Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.  He is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Dr. Bechtold is board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Despite a busy clinical schedule, Dr. Bechtold has published over 100 articles in outcomes research, nutrition, enteral access, and preventative strategies. He is actively involved in multiple national societies and serves as a member and chair on multiple national committees. He has been a national speaker on gastroenterology, quality improvement, and nutrition topics. He is very passionate about gastrointestinal diseases, nutrition, and quality improvement.
