In this didactic and experiential learning session, the learner will experience the clinic setting through the eyes of the LGBTQ+ patient. Research show LGBTQ+ patients are at high risk for mental and physical health disparities. These disparities are worsened by perceived and actual barriers to culturally competent LGBTQ+ healthcare. Many topics will be introduced on how to help physicians make the healthcare setting a safe and welcoming environment for their LGBTQ+ patients, including the impact of the waiting room, intake forms, patient interactions. The presenter will also use role-playing and an interactive A & A session to reinforce learning.

This presentation will help physicians gain insight and knowledge on how to create a physical environment that feels safe and welcoming for their LGGTQ+ patients. The physician will also learn how to introduce sensitive topics with their LGBTQ+ patients allowing meaningful dialogue for optimal care.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
•    Explain the ways to create a safe and welcoming environment for their LGBTQ+ patient allowing for more optimal care.
•    Demonstrate how to approach sensitive topics with their LGBTQ+ patients to enhance patient disclosure and subsequent outcomes.
•    Create a safe environment that will allow the patient to come out to their healthcare provider.
•    Describe who is at higher risk for suicide and how to assess for suicide during the patient encounter.
