This presentation will review the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dementia. The focus of this presentation is to give primary care physicians the knowledge and skills needed to effectively treat dementia patients.

- DSM 5 nomenclature for dementia & MCI
- Update on Alzheimer’s Dz prevention, diagnosis and treatment
- Management issues in dementia; esp non-pharmacologic
- PCP to become lead in management

Dr. Howard Graitzer had a solo geriatric practice in Portland, Oregon, for 21 years until 2014. He then became an independent contractor and attending physician in Skilled Nursing Facilities for the Kaiser Permanente Geriatric and Long-Term Care Division until 2018. He is currently volunteering as an attending physician for End of Life Choices Oregon (EOLCOR) for patients undergoing medical aid in dying. Dr. Graitzer attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Zieger-Botsford Hospitals in Farmington Hills, Michigan. He then completed a mini-residency in Geriatric Medicine at the California Geriatric Education Center at the University of California in Los Angeles. Dr. Graitzer is board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Graitzer serves on several education committees for the Oregon Geriatrics Society and is a co-founder of OGS. He also served as a multi-facility medical director for 30 years. Dr. Graitzer co-authored a chapter for a geriatric nursing textbook called "Medications in the Elderly." He has also served as co-principal investigator for a phase III clinical trial on a new pain delivery system (buprenorphine patch). In 2003, he received the Women's Health and Wellness Award from the AOA, and in 2015, he was named the "Physician of the Year" by the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon (OPSO).
