The 2023 Physician Wellness Seminar is a collaborative effort of the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP),
Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and the Missouri State Medical
Association (MSMA). Each organization was highly involved in the development of the program, with
members on the planning committee and faculty.

The entire program has been developed by physicians for physicians. Participants will be
actively involved in the program, working with the faculty facilitators as they delve into physician
wellness and practical wellness strategies to implement in their personal and professional lives.

As spouses and significant others are integral to physician wellness, they are encouraged
to attend and participate! Some sessions will be specific to spouses, while most will involve both.
All participants will complete the DISC assessment and Mini Z Burnout Inventory prior to the seminar and
participate in activities to unpack the results. Time for reflection and fun on your own is built into the weekend.
If you've attended one of our past seminars, you can expect new activities and experiences!

GOALS & GUIDELINES

 Program Goals

  1. Evaluate personal wellness.
  2. Create a toolbox of tactics and strategies to assist in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
  3. Develop a realistic personal and family wellness and accountability plan.

Attendance Guidelines

Before registering for the Physician Wellness Seminar, please read and consider the following attendance guidelines.

  1. CME is being offered for this program, BUT it should not be the reason you attend the program. Some sessions will be for CME; others will not. However, all sessions will be geared toward helping you achieve personal wellness.
  2. Be flexible. We are certain some sessions will generate more conversation and discussion than others. Be prepared for some sessions to go long and others to be shorter than designed. We want to ensure we focus on what YOU find interesting and important.
  3. Plan on attending all sessions. If you can’t or don’t want to, this is not the program for you. The curriculum and outcomes are based on the idea that attendees will be present for all sessions.
  4. This program is physician designed and led. You will not be listening to lectures all day but will be asked to participate in your own learning. If you enjoy interacting with others and presenting your own ideas, you will like the format of this program. If this is not your thing, take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, and try!
  5. There will be some “homework” prior to the meeting. It won’t take long, but your experience at the meeting will be dependent on your preparation before the meeting.

3:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Mini Z Discussion: Burnout Inventory and Mental Health First Aid: Russ Carpenter, DO, FASAM & Heather Johns, LCSW

4:00 PM to 5:00 PM: The Eight Dimensions of Wellness: John Paulson, DO, PhD, FAAFP

Do you ever wonder, “Where do I start?” Achieving wellness is an active process requiring awareness and choices toward a more successful and enjoyable existence. This session will focus on developing a basic understanding of the eight dimensions of wellness and tools to make wise choices towards wellness. These principles will be used throughout the conference as we strive to construct our individual wellness improvement plans.

5:00 PM to 6:30 PM: The Power of Play: Katie Davenport-Kabonic, DO, FAAFP, Fariha Shafi, MD, FACP & Amanda Shipp, MD

What is play? As an adult, do you play? Play is something we often associate with children. Children “at play” are probably some of the happiest people we know! So why don’t adults play more? This session will encourage participants to focus on incorporating play to enhance wellness and happiness at home and at work. Some practice will also be involved, so come ready to PLAY!

6:30 PM to 7:30 PM: Group Dinner & Discussion

Saturday - Subject to Change

6:30 AM to 7:30 AM: Early Riser Programs: HIIT (Jeffrey Davis, DO), Morning Walk (Katie Davenport-Kabonic, DO, FAAFP)

8:00 AM to 8:30 AM: Breakfast

8:30 AM to 9:00 AM: Nutrition for the Busy Physician - Practice What You Preach! : Victoria Damba, DO & Jeffrey Davis, DO

As busy physicians, we often don’t “practice what we preach!” Just like our patients, we have busy lives that often distract us from our own wellness. During this session, learn practical tips for nutritious meals and snacks and strategies to develop healthy eating habits in the everyday busy life of a physician. The best part? These strategies can be shared with patients as well!

9:00 AM to 10:30 AM: DISC Assessment: Communication Styles & Practical Strategies to Communicate with Colleagues: Russ Carpenter, DO & Heather Johns, LCSW

Have you ever had your day ruined because of something someone said to you? Most of us have. In this session, we will look at our own communication styles and evaluate the styles of others based on the results of our pre-conference DISC assessments. We learn strategies to better express ourselves to those with different communication styles and tricks to receive communication better. Why let what someone says ruin our day, right?

10:30 AM to 11:00 AM: Movement Break: Restful Practices: Katie Davenport-Kabonic, DO, FAAFP

11:00 AM to 12:00 PM: Ideal Practice Description: Jeff Davis, DO

Every physician has a vision of their ideal practice, but not often do we take the time to evaluate how closely our actual practice compares to that ideal. In this activity, you will clearly develop your ideal practice description, compare it to your current practice situation, and then evaluate your level of satisfaction with their alignment. Practical strategies to get better alignment will also be discussed.

12:00 AM to 12:30 PM: Lunch

12:30 PM to 1:00 PM: Mindfulness Principles: Heather Johns, LCSW

This activity will focus on the principles of mindfulness and its evidence-based benefits for our wellness, including increasing self-awareness of your stress levels. Participants will discuss and practice ways to incorporate mindfulness skills into their practice of medicine.

1:00 PM to 1:30 PM: Resiliency & Discomfort: John Paulson, DO, PhD, FAAFP

Have you ever quit something because “it was just too hard?” Have you ever not done something because “it was just too hot? Or cold?” Now flip the switch. Have you ever completed something that you didn’t think you could? Have you ever “stuck it out” and finished, even when you wanted to give up? Being uncomfortable isn’t something we typically seek out today. But experiencing discomfort can make us stronger and more resilient. During this session, learn the principles behind discomfort science and how to “enjoyably” introduce discomfort tour lives and become more resilient in the process.

1:30 PM to 2:00 PM: Movement Break: Mindful Movement: Katie Davenport-Kabonic, DO, FAAFP

2:00 PM to 3:30 PM: Breakout Sessions: Attendees choose two 45 minute sessions to attend from sessions 1, 2 or 3:
