The mission of the MSSU-KCU Research Consortium (MKRC) is to engage MSSU and KCU students in inter-disciplinary clinical & basic research opportunities for learning. The MKRC seeks to improve the health of people in the Joplin, Missouri, and Four-States community. The mission of the MKRC is to investigate evidence-based osteopathic medicine through a team-based health care delivery strategy. The presentations by Drs. Arnce and Staudinger will highlight two ongoing clinical research studies at KCU in Joplin.

Robert Arnce, MD, FACEP, is a board certified, residency trained emergency physician. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri in 1989. He graduated from Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota in 1993 and completed his residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Louisville in 1996. He received his board certification Emergency Medicine from the American Board of Emergency Medicine in 1996 and Fellowship status from the American College of Emergency Physicians in 1999.
Dr. Arnce is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Kansas City University (KCU). He practiced emergency medicine for over 30 years and is an attending in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Elijah Elliott is currently a medical student at Kansas City University. Growing up in the small town of Oswego, KS, Elijah Elliott was drawn to the path of being a physician by noticing the health disparities of rural areas, as well as the importance of close relationships between physician and community. Elijah came to KCU by way of the “Yours to Lose” program, an accelerated acceptance partnership between KCU and Missouri Southern State University. During his undergraduate years, he spent much of his time in the classroom, volunteering at Freeman’s ICU, tutoring local high school students, and spending time with peers. Since arriving at KCU, Elijah has served the role of Treasurer for KCU-Joplin’s the Student American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics club, and has also joined other students at the Missouri Southern-Kansas City University Research Consortium (MKRC). At the MKRC, Elijah has participated in the “OMT and Opioid Use Disorder” project, and has also helped write a review article over the Post Translational Modifications of Pregnane-X Receptor.

Dr. Staudinger serves as the Director of the MSSU-KCU Stress Research Consortium (MKRC). The MKRC is housed within the Biomedical Research Laboratory (BMRL), which is comprised of approximately 3,000 square feet of office and wet-lab space located 6.8 miles from the KCU campus on the campus of Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) in Joplin. Dr. Staudinger also serves as the course director for the Biomedical Science Research Elective (IDIS 198) offered through the KCU-COM. Student participation in this research elective course serves as an entry into ongoing research efforts, and is intended to provide a framework within which both KCU COM & two-year CKU COB M.S. students may engage in bio medical science research projects in Joplin. This course represents a mechanism by which students will receive academic credit for their participation in our research studies. These research-related activities are sponsored and located at the BMRL at MMSU, the KCU campus, or other approved regional partner institution(s) in Joplin. Phill Vainer is currently a medical student at Kansas City University. Phill came to KCU after graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 2016 with his B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In Reno, he worked as a phlebotomist and clinical laboratory assistant. Outside of work, he volunteered at a Harm Reduction Center where he operated a clean needle/syringe exchange program, educated the community on harm reduction principles, performed anonymous STD testing, and provided counseling services to several at-risk populations. Since arriving at KCU, Phill has taken on multiple leadership positions and research opportunities. In his first year at KCU, Phill helped author the paper: “Cadaveric Analysis on the Spatial Properties of the Sural nerve around the Lateral Malleolus,” published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. Likewise, he is an active participant in the Missouri Southern-KCU Research Consortium (MKRC). With the MKRC, he has hosted multiple presentations, including journal club presentations and presentations related to his current research. In addition to his work on Opioid Use Disorder, he is currently helping author a review article covering the Pregnane X Receptor alongside his colleagues in the Staudinger Lab. Outside of research, Phill is a member of the Osteopathic Honor Society, Sigma Sigma Phi, the Treasurer of the Research Club, Logistics Coordinator of the Emergency Medicine Club, and an anatomy tutor.
