In this presentation, Dr. Plisco will present information and statistics on ECMO during CPR (ECPR). He will discuss indications, outcomes, timing, and difficulties of the process.
Learning Objectives:
• Learners will become familiar with ECMO in adults and the availability of referral centers.
• Learners will distinguish indications and contraindications of ECMO for a given critical patient.
• Learners will improve patient recovery time and decrease disability when dealing with cardio and/or respiratory failure.
• Learners will advocate for the patient that would possibly benefit from referral to the ECMO center.

Dr. Michael Plisco is a Pulmonologist, Critical Care Physician, and the Medical Director of the ECMO Program at Mercy Hospital St. Louis, Missouri. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in Internal Medicine at St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Plisco is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Pulmonary Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also board certified in Neurocritical Care by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties and Critical Care Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography.
Dr. Plisco completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Biology in 1994 at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. In 1999, he received his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine Montserrat Campus in the West Indies. He completed an internship in 2001 and a residency in Internal Medicine in 2003 at St. Mary’s Health Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Plisco then completed a Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship in 2006 at St. Louis University School of Medicine.
Dr. Plisco has received many teaching honors, including being named Teacher of the Year by Mercy Hospital IM Residency in 2021-2022 and Teacher of the Year by Mercy Critical Care Fellowship in 2020-2021, 2019-2020, 2018-2019, 2017-2018, and 2013-2014. He also received the Society of Critical Care Medicine Healthcare Specialty Award in 2004.
Dr. Plisco enjoys spending time with his wife and playing with his kids and dogs in his free time. He also enjoys hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and off-roading in his jeep.
