This presentation will review ethics, best practices, and legal considerations regarding medical futility - with an emphasis on withholding/de-escalating treatment.
Learning Objectives:
• Develop a practical sense/working definition of what constitutes medical futility… or doesn’t!
• Recognize pitfalls to determining futility, such as bias or paternalism.
• Become comfortable with ethical practices, approaching futility.
• Discuss legal cases that helped shape current practice.
• Apply futility ethics in real life!

Natalie Alexander, DO, is board certified in family medicine. Her professional interests include women’s health, family planning, LGBTQ+ health and bioethics.
Compassionate and understanding, she embraces a collaborative approach to caring for her patients in order to meet her patients’ goals. She believes it is her job to listen to patients, evaluate their situation and provide the best advice she can based on sound medical evidence.
With a background in ethics, including a related master’s degree from Kansas City University and participation on the Cone Health ethics committee, she believes it is beneficial to have an academic understanding plus real world experience when it comes to tackling ethical situations in a compassionate manner. She is particularly interested in issues around reproductive/sexual health and end of life care.
In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, camping and horseback riding.
