In this presentation, the presenter will discuss what HCC coding is, how it affects reimbursement, and how it can affect patient care. The presenter will also discuss disease recognition, diagnosis specificity, and how to incorporate these into charting. 

Learning Objectives:

 Learners will recognize what HCC Coding is and how it affects their patients and reimbursement.
·    Learners will formulate new ways to review test reports and recognize diseases and their complications.
·    Learners will utilize HCC Coding to improve patient insurance coverage in a value-based care program.

Dr. Laura Crandall was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri area. She moved back with her husband after practicing medicine in Detroit, Michigan, for ten years. In 2012 Dr. Crandall joined Esse Health in St. Louis, Missouri. She is a Private Practice Internist providing care in a hospital, rehab facility, and an outpatient clinic. Dr. Crandall is a Preceptor and Associate Clinical Faculty at Barnes Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College in St. Louis, Missouri. She is also an Associate Clinical Faculty at A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) in Kirksville, Missouri.

Dr. Crandall is a graduate of A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) in Kirksville, Missouri. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at St. John Detroit Riverview Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Crandall is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Crandall is passionate about providing the best medical care to all her patients. She is proud of her office for being friendly & efficient and for putting their patients and their families as a top priority. Dr. Crandall lives in the St. Louis area with her husband, their two daughters, and their dogs. In her free time, she loves working in the yard, reading a variety of books, and fly fishing.

Dr. Nakashima-Moran is a Family Medicine Physician with Esse Health in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in 2010. He attended Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated in 2015. He returned to St. Louis for his residency in Family Practice at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, which he completed in 2018.

When not working, he enjoys taking and editing photographs, finding new restaurants, hunting, and spending time with his wife Brittainy and his dog Sasha. His interests include automobiles, technology, cinema and television.
