Any healthcare provider who wants to learn how to provide more culturally competent care to the LGBTQ community will greatly benefit from this session. The following topics will be discussed during this session: LGBTQ+ terminology; the difference between sex and gender identity and at what age each can present; issues LGBTQ people face, including coming out, premature disclosure, internalized trans and homophobia; and how to help a patient or colleague feel comfortable coming out to you. The participant will also learn how to create a welcoming environment for their LGBTQ+ identified patients.
At the conclusion of this session, providers will be able to:
1. Describe how to set the stage for a patient or colleague to come out without prematurely outing them.
2. List healthcare issues LGBTQ people are at higher risk for.
3. Discuss how to create a clinical environment welcoming to the LGBTQ community.

Ronald Holt, DO, is a board-certified psychiatrist, author, and national speaker. For over two decades, Holt has been a relentless advocate and educator on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and civil rights. In 2008, Holt expanded his presentations nationally to include LGBTQ+ healthcare, the consequences of bullying, and suicide risk reduction. He has presented to hundreds of audiences, including physician audiences, on how to provide culturally competent care to the LGBTQ+ community.
Holt, along with his husband, William Huggett, MD, have published a self-help book and supportive coloring books for the LGBTQ+ community.
He has received several awards across the country for his community service and commitment to diversity. In the late 2000s, Holt received his previous employer’s David Lawrence community service award and RJ Erickson diversity achievement award, making him the first physician within Kaiser Permanente to receive both awards in the individual category.
In 2022, he was elevated to Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and graduated from SFSU with a MA degree in Sexuality.
His master’s thesis was original research entitled, “The Impact of Rural Geography on Sexual Identity.” In addition to being a KCU Adjunct Assistant Professor, Holt currently practices as a student health physician at San Francisco State University.
