The 2023 Physician Wellness Seminar is a collaborative effort of the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP),
Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and the Missouri State Medical
Association (MSMA). Each organization was highly involved in the development of the program, with
members on the planning committee and faculty.
The entire program has been developed by physicians for physicians. Participants will be
actively involved in the program, working with the faculty facilitators as they delve into physician
wellness and practical wellness strategies to implement in their personal and professional lives.
As spouses and significant others are integral to physician wellness, they are encouraged
to attend and participate! Some sessions will be specific to spouses, while most will involve both.
All participants will complete the DISC assessment and Mini Z Burnout Inventory prior to the seminar and
participate in activities to unpack the results. Time for reflection and fun on your own is built into the weekend.

MAOPS is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.

Russ Carpenter is a psychiatrist at the Center for Mental Wellness at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, MO. He is originally from St. Louis where he completed his undergraduate degree at St. Louis University before attending medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA. He completed psychiatry residency training at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. He has served as the Medical Director for the Physician and Health Professional Wellness Program sponsored by MAOPS since 2016. He is also a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and serves as the Medical Director of an opioid use disorder treatment center with Behavioral Health Group. Russ was named the Chief Wellness Officer at Capital Region Medical Center in November of 2020. To further partner with physicians and support them in achieving and maintaining optimal wellness, he completed a 9-month training program in 2020-2021 through The Physician Coaching Institute to earn his certification as a Master Physician Development Coach.

Victoria Damba, DO is a Board-Certified Family Medicine physician from Farmington, Missouri. Dr. Damba currently works for Mercy Go Health in the St. Louis area doing Urgent Care.
Dr. Damba takes her health seriously, especially in the area of prevention. She regularly participates in activities to improve her physical wellbeing including, bicycling, running, walking, yoga and weight training. She also focuses on healthy eating as much as possible.
Dr. Damba has helped develop the Physician Wellness Retreat and looks forward to sharing nutrition tips for busy physicians as well as helping physicians struggling with balance in their lives.

Dr. Katie Davenport-Kabonic is a graduate of the AT Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM), where she graduated with honors, and in 2012 was selected as a MAOPS Wetzel Scholar. She completed her residency at Cox Family Medicine in Springfield, MO. She completed her Obstetrics fellowship at Cox Family Medicine in Springfield, MO. She currently serves Cox Health Family Medicine with Obstetrics as a Faculty Physician and is the SWMO AHEC – Springfield Director of Student Medical Education in Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Davenport-Kabonic is also an active member of the MAOPS Education and Convention Committee, the KCOM Curriculum Committee, the Lead Physician for the Walk With A Doc program, and recently obtained her Ozark Mountain Yoga, RYS 200 certification.

Dr. Jeff Davis practices in Memphis, MO where he is the Chief Medical Officer and staff family medicine physician for Scotland County Hospital. In addition, he keeps busy as Medical Examiner for Scotland County and as a staff physician for Scotland County Care Center and Residential Care Facility, and Memphis Medical Services, a federally qualified hospital-based rural health clinic. Throughout his career, he has been providing well-woman, obstetrics and adolescent care, and continues to deliver babies. Dr. Davis serves the profession passionately. He is a past president of MAOPS and has served on every committee in the organization. He continues to serve as Education Co-Chair, and a member of the Leadership Development Committee, Finance & Audit Committee, and Legislative Committee. He is an AOA Delegate for Missouri and continues to stay active in the Northeast District. Dr. Davis is a graduate of ATSU-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at Southern Illinois University Quincy Family Practice in Quincy, IL. Dr. Davis is board certified in Family Medicine.
In his free time, Jeff is an avid biker, fitness enthusiast, enjoys traveling and spending time with family.

George Hubbell was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri. He earned a degree in Biology from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. He matriculated to medical school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, obtaining a medical degree in 1987, then completing residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
Hubbell began private practice in the rural community of Osage Beach, Missouri, in 1991, starting Women’s Health Consultants of the Ozarks. There he practiced for nearly three decades with a nurse practitioner. His practice emphasized office procedures and minimally invasive pelvic surgery but included all aspects of women’s health. Formerly, he was associated with Conceptus, Ethicon Women’s Health and Urology, and Hologic as a preceptor, consultant, and nationwide speaker. Hubbell participated in two FDA studies for office procedures. Currently, he clinically maintains an active locum tenens coverage.
Hubbell has long been active in the Missouri Section of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG). He served on the Missouri section advisory council and later as chair, presently serving as a past chair. Other statewide advocacy duties include serving as Councilor and President for the Missouri State Medical Association.
He has been married for over four decades to Victoria, a professor and author, and is an empty nester with two adult children, a granddaughter and grandson, two large and demanding dogs, and two cats. In his free time, he enjoys horticulture on his farm, bicycling, golf, and wing shooting.

Heather Johns is the manager at the Center for Mental Wellness at Capital Region Medical Center. She graduated from Missouri Western State University with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and completed her Masters in Social Work at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Heather obtained her clinical license in social work practicing in an outpatient setting working with all ages around mental health diagnosis and family life stressors. She also earned her Master Certified Physician Development Coach license. Heather is the clinical administrator for the MAOPS Physician and Health Professional Wellness Program serving physicians and health professionals throughout the state of Missouri.
Heather enjoys traveling, spending time with friends and family, yoga, walking my Bassett Hound and attending sporting events.

John Paulson, DO, PhD, FAAFP graduated from Oklahoma State University Center for Health Science with a DO and PhD in Biomedical Science with emphasis in pharmacology and physiology. Prior to medical school, he worked as a forensic scientist for the FBI, New Mexico State Police, and Tulsa Police Department. One of his cases making it on A&E Cold Case Files television show. He attended Cox Family Medicine Residency in Springfield, MO. He continues to practice rural family medicine in Missouri at Access Family Care the local Federally Qualified Health Center in Joplin, MO. He has previously served as the Medical Director of the Primary Care Department and Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer for Freeman Health System. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Currently, he serves as the Department Chair of Primary Care at Kansas City University (KCU) Faber-McIntire Campus in Joplin. He is a core faculty member at the Freeman/KCU inaugural Family Medicine Residency that started in July 2022. He is a past-president of the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians, and the Community Clinic of Southwest Missouri’s board of directors in Joplin, MO. Dr Paulson has completed the AACOM Osteopathic Health Policy Fellowship and the AAFP Leading Physician Wellness certificate program. Dr Paulson is passionate about chasing elk in the high country of Colorado every September with his bow. Most recently, reflecting back on the hardships in his personal life and how each of them has made him stronger and more prepared for the future, he has developed an interest in discomfort science. He now sees this as an opportunity to help others maximize their potential and improve wellness with some intentional and planned discomfort. This idea has renewed his curiosity and he has started to investigate this idea with hopes of finding a way to utilize intentional discomfort in a way that will improve physical and mental wellness for others. Dr. Fariha Shafi is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of General Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. She is also the Medical Director of the Medical Assistant Program at University Health, Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Shafi originally hails from Kashmir, a disputed area in the foothills of the Himalayas. The political unrest led her to leave Kashmir at a very young age, growing up between the Middle East and her homeland. After finishing high school, she moved to the Dominican Republic and earned her MD at the Universidad Technologica De Santiago (UTESA) in Santiago, graduating with honors. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the State University of New York in Buffalo. Dr. Shafi is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
Dr. Shafi is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and is the Chair of the Wellness Committee and the Women in Medicine Committee of the Missouri chapter of ACP. She works hard to find ways to prevent Physician Burnout and enjoys promoting wellness locally, regionally, and nationally. A lot of her professional joy comes from formal mentoring of students, residents, and other faculty members. In addition, Dr. Shafi is a Councilor for District 7 of the Missouri State Medical Association and serves on their Public Health Committee. Dr. Shafi is also a member of the Kansas City Medical Society Leadership Council and KCMS Wellness Council. She is on the Editorial Board for Missouri Medicine and the leadership council for the Kansas City Medical Society.
Dr. Shafi and her husband, Dr. Abid Bhat, a sleep specialist, have been married for 23 yrs. She credits him for her ability to take a nap anywhere. Together they have two beautiful children and two equally beautiful cats! They moved to the Kansas City area 17 years ago, which is the longest she has managed to stay in one geographical location. Dr. Shafi is very involved with her local community, serving in multiple roles within the Blue Valley School District. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Blue Valley Educational Foundation. Dr. Shafi loves to travel, cook, sing, and read books. She loves to binge-watch Netflix for the right kind of show.

Dr. Amanda Shipp graduated with her MD from University of Missouri School of Medicine in 2011 followed by Family Medicine residency at Mizzou in Columbia, MO and is ABFM certified. She is employed by Capital Region Physicians in her hometown of Versailles, MO where she has practiced since 2014. She serves on the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors for district 5. She was voted Missouri’s Best Doctor for 2022 and 2023! She completed the American Academy of Family Physicians Leading Physician Wellness inaugural program in 2021. She has always had an interest in physician wellness and has been in pursuit of balance as a physician and mother since residency. She has survived a burnout journey and has shared her story with other physicians and students. She enjoys baking, sewing, movie marathons, roller coasters, and vacations to Disney World with her husband Ben, and children Olivia, Finn, Henry, and Rosalind.

Dr. David Tannehill is the Clinical Director of Critical Care Medicine for Mercy Clinic and the Medical Director of Mercy Hospital Washington in Washington, Missouri. Dr. Tannehill is board certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Neurocritical Care Medicine by the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties. He is also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, and Emergency Neurologic Life Support.
Dr. Tannehill is a Past-President of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons and a Past-President and current member of the Missouri Board of Professional Registration for the Healing Arts. Dr. Tannehill has won multiple awards for teaching excellence at Mercy Clinic and Mercy Virtual. He was integral in developing Mercy's Sepsis Program. His leadership has helped the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts develop an approach to telemedicine and physician wellness that the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons has adopted. He is a 1998 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a 2005 graduate of A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) in Kirksville, Missouri.

Jim Wieberg is semi-retired from the Center for Mental Wellness at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, MO, which he founded and served for 35 years. He carried a patient load, managed the Center and was a founding member of the MAOPS Physician Health Program, which he continues to be invested in today. He served on the executive board of the Federation of Physician Health Programs for four years.
Jim and his wife Diane have seven children between them who are literally scattered worldwide. This affords them many opportunities to travel and they adore helping care for their nine grandchildren. They also love to garden and pretend that their 10 acres in the city is a large farm. They exercise frequently, and can’t get enough of the Cardinals, Chiefs, and Tigers.

This session will focus on developing a basic understanding of the eight dimensions of wellness and tools to make wise choices towards wellness. These principles will be used throughout the conference as we strive to construct our individual wellness improvement plans.

Have you ever had your day ruined because of something someone said to you? Most of us have. In this session, we will look at our own communication styles and evaluate the styles of others based on the results of our pre-conference DISC assessments. We learn strategies to better express ourselves to those with different communication styles and tricks to receive communication better. Why let what someone says ruin our day, right?

Every physician has a vision of their ideal practice, but not often do we take the time to evaluate how closely our actual practice compares to that ideal. In this activity, you will clearly develop your ideal practice description, compare it to your current practice situation, and then evaluate your level of satisfaction with their alignment. Practical strategies to get better alignment will also be discussed.

Have you ever quit something because “it was just too hard?” Have you ever not done something because “it was just too hot? Or cold?” Now flip the switch. Have you ever completed something that you didn’t think you could? Have you ever “stuck it out” and finished, even when you wanted to give up? Being uncomfortable isn’t something we typically seek out today. But experiencing discomfort can make us stronger and more resilient. During this session, learn the principles behind discomfort science and how to “enjoyably” introduce discomfort tour lives and become more resilient in the process.

Today’s fast-paced world tends to induce feelings of being “rushed” or “hurried,” often leading to spending less time on the things that really matter. During this activity, you will discuss aspects of spiritual wellness, emphasizing the elimination of “hurry” and evaluating the benefits to our personal and professional lives.
“Unplug.” We’ve all heard the term. But why does occasionally “unplugging” make sense for our personal wellness? During this session, learn about the historical perspective as to how social media developed and how the technology is used from an attention engineering perspective. Then learn ways to leverage technology to improve wellness and things to avoid that are likely detracting from our wellness.
