This Patient Safety presentation will create awareness and promote active steps toward a safer delivery of care. With the information provided, healthcare professionals will have a better perspective on improving safety events in the different types of healthcare services.

Learning Objectives:
•    Identify the evolution of patient safety globally and trends within inpatient and outpatient settings
•    Discuss the scope of patient safety incidents within the healthcare system in the United States
•    Assemble resources for primary care clinic use to identify opportunities for improvement in patient safety
•    Discuss patient safety measures and trending research
•    Identify opportunities for individuals to contribute to patient safety within their clinic or institution

Accreditation Statements:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of .75 AOA Category 1-A Credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation.

Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) designates this enduring activity for a maximum of .75 AMA PRA Category 1 Creditsä. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine. MAOPS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

All grievances will receive an initial response in writing within 30 days of receipt.  If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response, they can submit a complaint in writing to the Council on Continuing Medical Education of the AOA at 142 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

At KCU, Dr. Howell has filled various roles and enjoys teaching clinical skills to undergraduate medical students. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Juan Jaramillo MBA, LSSGB is the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Education Coordinator for the Kansas City University Graduate Medical Education (GME) Department.  He is the Chair of the KCU GME Consortium Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Subcommittee. Juan has been working for the private and public sector in the USA and Colombia, and has more than 10 years of experience in education and practice in the healthcare field. He has an MBA from Illinois Tech and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. His professional passion is healthcare quality improvement.

He enjoys outdoor activities, practicing golf and cooking for his family and friends.
