The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) has teamed with the state osteopathic associations in Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington to offer this Simply CME Event. Registrants must be paid members of one of these six state osteopathic associations to receive the member rate. This virtual event promises to offer physicians the flexibility to attend a LIVE Event Virtually and/or access this event On-Demand for 45 days after the live event concludes. This event is worth eight (8) AOA Category 1-A Credits and eight (8) AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. If you choose not to participate in the live event, you may complete the entire event on-demand at a later date and time that fits your schedule. This event will consist of eight (8) pre-recorded presentations, but the speakers will be live on the day of the event to answer questions on the discussion forum.

The Simply CME #5 event will go On-Demand on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at 8:00 am CST. Registration to complete this event On-Demand will end on Monday, December 13, 2021 at midnight. Registrants have until Monday, January 3, 2022, at midnight to complete this Simply CME Event On-Demand. Attendees' AOA CME credits will be reported to the AOA by Wednesday, January 19, 2022. If attendees need their certificate before this date, please call the MAOPS office at (573) 634-3415. This event offers great flexibility because you can watch some or all of the lectures live on Saturday, November 13, 2021, or on-demand at a later date. Please e-mail any questions or comments about this virtual event to Jeff Buthod.

Dr. Sonia Rivera-Martinez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) in Old Westbury, New York. She is also the Associate Medical Director for the Family Health Care Center, the Director of the Community Free Clinic, and the Latino Medical Student Association Faculty Advisor at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). As Associate Professor, she teaches 1st and 2nd-year osteopathic medical students in the Doctor-Patient Relationship course, precepts 3rd-year osteopathic medical students while providing patient care at the NYITCOM Academic Health Care Centers, and precepts students in their 1st through 4th years at the NYIT Community Free Clinic. She is board certified in Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.  

She set several goals for herself early in her osteopathic career, including expanding the public's knowledge of osteopathic medicine through research and advocacy, teaching medical students the art and science of osteopathic medicine, providing medical services in underserved areas, and educating patients about healthy lifestyles. In keeping with these goals, she has been very active serving the profession in various national, state, and local organizations. She serves on the American Osteopathic Association Board of Trustees and is the past President of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society.

Dr. Rivera-Martinez earned her osteopathic medical degree from NYITCOM. She completed her internship and residency in family medicine at Long Beach (New York) Medical Center, where she served as chief resident. She also was named Intern of the Year in 2002-2003. At NYITCOM, she serves as the Associate Medical Director for the Academic Health Centers and Director of the NYIT Community Free Clinic, which are student-run clinics providing services to the uninsured and underinsured population.

An avid researcher, Dr. Rivera-Martinez received a research grant from the AOA to fund a randomized controlled trial for diabetes and OMM. Her research has been published in many journals, including The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association and Osteopathic Family Physician. She's received many awards honoring her dedication to medicine, including the National American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians Outstanding Female Leader Award, the NYSOMS Unsung Hero Award, and the American Osteopathic Foundation Wyeth Emerging Leader Award.

Eric Reynolds, MD, CAQSM's Profile

Dr. Eric Reynolds is a sports medicine and pediatrics physician at MercyOne Des Moines Pediatrics Urgent Care Clinic, Des Moines, Iowa. He serves as the medical director for this clinic. Dr. Reynolds graduated with his bachelor's degree in Integrative Physiology in 2010 from the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa. He graduated in 2014 with his Doctor of Medicine degree also from the University of Iowa. He completed his residency in pediatrics at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2017 before completing one year as Chief Resident in 2018. He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he completed his primary care sports medicine fellowship at University Hospitals/Rainbow Babies and Children in 2019, treating patients and athletes of all ages.

Dr. Reynolds specializes in musculoskeletal complaints, diagnostic ultrasound, and concussion management with associated return-to-play decisions. His areas of expertise are diagnosing and managing many common musculoskeletal injuries for patients of all ages. This includes acute muscle or ligament injury, non-surgical fractures, osteoarthritis - including ultrasound-guided injections of any joint, stress fractures, and pediatric overuse injuries.  

Dr. Reynolds enjoys biking, running, and spending time with his wife and son outside of work.

Rebecca Spear, DO's Profile

Dr. Rebecca Spear grew up and attended school in Maine, earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. She received her medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. She completed residency training in Internal Medicine at UConn Health in Farmington, Connecticut, where she developed a passion for teaching and caring for older adult patients. She saw the challenges many patients face as they navigate life with serious illnesses and how these patients and their families can be supported by palliative care. Following a chief resident year focused on teaching skills, she completed a combined geriatric medicine and hospice and palliative medicine fellowship at Yale University.

Dr. Spear works for the Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta, Maine. She serves as the Program Director for the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. While her practice is primarily involved in the inpatient setting, she has a passion for improving models of care to keep older adults in the community whenever possible. 

In her free time, Dr. Spear enjoys spending time outdoors, especially exploring new walking, biking, and hiking trails with her husband and son.

Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor and Chief of Psychiatry at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. He is also a Founding Psychiatry Residency Program Director at Portsmouth Regional Hospital's new GME program affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Dr. Smith is board certified in Psychiatry by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry and is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine.  

Dr. Smith worked as the sole psychiatrist in Washington County, Maine, for five years before pursuing other opportunities. He is currently clinically active at the State Psychiatric Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. He serves on the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure and is the Clerkship Director of Psychiatry for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Smith has spoken nationally and at several regional educational programs in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

Dr. Smith is passionate about teaching and has received several teaching and leadership awards. He is most interested in Psychopharmacology and somatic treatments of psychiatric illness, such as electroconvulsive therapy and newly emerging neuropsychiatric surgical techniques. He is also interested in medical and undergraduate teaching modalities and how pedagogy and andragogy intersect.

Cassandra White, PharmD, BCACP, BCGP's Profile

Dr. Cassandra White is a 2012 graduate of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Albany, New York. After earning her Doctor of Pharmacy degree with a concentration in economics, she completed a post-graduate year-1 pharmacy practice residency at the VA Maine Healthcare System in Chelsea, Maine. Dr. White began her career in academia at Husson University in 2013 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice in 2019.

Dr. White started her career in 2005 as a pharmacy technician. Over time, she gained experience working at various pharmacies. She is a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist and a Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist. Dr. White is also a member of the Maine Pharmacy Association, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and American Pharmacists Association. She was on the Board of Directors for the Maine Pharmacy Association for five years and served as President from 2016 through 2019. Dr. White is the proud recipient of multiple awards and honors.  These include the HUSOP Teaching Excellence Award for Pharmacy Practice (2020), P2 Teacher of the Year (2020), P4 Teacher of the Year (2016, 2020), National Community Pharmacists Association Pharmacy Leadership Award for Maine (2018), Distinguished Young Pharmacist for Maine (2016), HUSOP Faculty Preceptor of the Year (2016), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year (2016), and Who's Who of American Universities (2012). She represents Husson University College of Health and Pharmacy as a clinical pharmacist for Maine Dartmouth Geriatric Medicine in Augusta. Dr. White is extremely passionate about her work and believes that teaching pharmacy students and serving patients in the community is her calling in life.

Dr. White is a former soccer and basketball player at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and competed on three division championship teams during her collegiate career. She is an avid runner and completed a full marathon in 2015. She has finished twenty-one triathlons with her sister. She also enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

Dr. David Drozek trained and practiced as a general surgeon for many years before his introduction to lifestyle medicine as a patient in 2011. Having personally experienced the reversal of chronic lifestyle-related disease, he transitioned into lifestyle medicine as a specialty. He is board certified in Lifestyle Medicine by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine and in General Surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.  He is also a fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.  

Dr. Drozek is an Associate Professor of Specialty Medicine and is involved in research at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio. He is also the Medical Director of Lifestyle Medicine at Marietta Memorial Health System in Marietta, Ohio. He works with the employee and community wellness programs in his clinical practice, which serve as a teaching and research venue. His research is focused on the teaching and delivery of lifestyle medicine, especially for people with limited resources.

Dr. Jenette Tschirhart has been an OBGYN practicing at MaineGeneral Health in Augusta and Waterville, Maine, since 2020. She previously was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was the residency program director at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dr. Tschirhart completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune City, New Jersey. Dr. Tschirhart lives in coastal Maine with her husband and three children. She enjoys hiking in New England, knitting, and playing video games with her kids in her spare time.

Dr. Eden Miller is an Osteopathic Family Practitioner. She received her medical degree from AT Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1997. Dr. Miller then returned to the Northwest to complete her residency in Family Practice at East Moreland Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She recently completed her board certification in Obesity Management by the American Board of Obesity Medicine. Dr. Miller is the founder of Diabetes Nation, a nonprofit organization, and CEO of Diabetes and Obesity Care, where she practices in Bend, Oregon. 

Dr. Miller has cultivated a special interest in diabetes after contracting type-1 diabetes while in medical school. Out of that personal experience, her practice has extended into a subspecialty in diabetes care. She is a passionate speaker and has given over 1000 lectures in the field of diabetes to health care providers and patients on subjects such as Diabetes Management, CGM Technology, Insulin Pump Therapy, Obesity, and Metabolism intervention, Clinical Research, and Healthcare Policy. Her adage for care is "she only succeeds as a provider if she turns patients into experts on their own disease."  

Dr. Miller believes that a physiologic patient individualized approach to diabetes intervention is crucial to success. She feels if our nation is to triumph over the ravages of diabetes, a collaborative effort; unhindered by fear of personal scrutiny, and barriers for effective treatment need to be removed. For her, diabetes and obesity care provide the foundational model to impact the people that represent this disease and begin the process of restoring hope back into their lives.
