Learners will better understand the various factors that impact and influence an athlete. They will better understand the various roles we, along with other professionals and non-professionals alike, play in the decision to return an athlete to sport after injury. Learners will be able to identify the roles other people play that can influence the athlete’s mentality.  They will also be able to utilize a standardized model that can help better formulate a plan in this decision-making process.

Learning Objectives:

Demonstrate the various factors that impact and influence the athlete
·    Differentiate the various roles professionals and non-professionals play in the decision for athletes to return to play after a sports injury
·    Describe the psychology of return to play
·    Formulate a plan for decision-making for the injured athlete

The event has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) through the joint providership of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and Kansas City University (KCU) College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Justice completed a year-long fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the prestigious American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala., under the direction of renowned orthopedic surgeon Lawrence Lemak, M.D. Prior to this, he completed a five-year orthopedic surgery residency through St. Mary’s Medical Center/Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed medical school at Oklahoma State University Center of Health Sciences in 2007. His undergraduate work was performed at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla.

Growing up, Dr. Justice was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in baseball, basketball and football. He continued his athletic career at Northeastern State University, where he played football for the NCAA Division II Redmen. He was a part of two conference championship teams, including one which made a run to the national semifinals in 1999.

During this time, he developed an interest in the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of athletic injuries. He has carried these interests into his practice today, where he focuses on problems that affect athletes and workers alike. He specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle, but is also skilled in total joint replacements (including anterior approach total hip replacements) and fractures of the extremities.

Dr. Justice is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and is an assistant professor of surgery with the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.

In his spare time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Shannan, have three children.
