This presentation will review what happens in the body during a stress response and the changes that occur. The illnesses that result from stress will be discussed and how physicians can help their patients overcome stress by counseling them.
Educational Objectives:
• Describe the wide variety of behavioral manifestations of stress responses and new thinking about disaster response.
• Understand the basic approaches of psychological first aid and stress first aid.
• Describe the 6 skills of psychological recovery.
• Be able to link the impact of chronic stress on physical health and mental health.

Dr. Saskia Hostetler-Lippy is the third-generation of physicians in her family to train at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She trained as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and has been an activist at the forefront of mental health, human rights and democracy activism. She has also been a volunteer in disaster psychology with the Crisis Emotional Care Team. Dr. Hostetler-Lippy completed her degree as a Psychoanalyst at Oregon Psychoanalytical Institute & Center in Portland, Oregon. She has been in clinical practice in Portland, Oregon, for over 18 years. Dr. Hostetler-Lippy works for Cascadia Health as the Medical Director of Acute Crisis Services in Portland, Oregon. She is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Sciences University, Portland, Oregon. Dr. Hostetler-Lippy is board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Hostetler-Lippy has worked in various mental health disaster response settings since 2020. She has worked with Physicians for Human Rights and the Crisis Emotional Care Team. Dr. Hostetler-Lippy holds a Climate Change and Public Health certificate from the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Connecticut. She is a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) graduate. She is herself a trauma survivor and brings personal experiences to recovery and wellness after surviving stressful and traumatic experiences.
Dr. Hostetler-Lippy enjoys forest bathing, hiking, yoga, and obsessively reading when not working.
