This presentation will review when and how to start a palliative care referral. The presenter will also discuss patient resources that are available and tips on having difficult conversations with patients.
Based on this discussion:
• Learners will understand the curative-palliative continuum.
• Learners will be able to thoughtfully explain palliative care and the importance of palliative care services.
• Learners will understand the most appropriate timing in initiating a palliative care consultation.
• Learners will receive communication pearls that will help them navigate difficult conversations with patients and families.
• Learners will better understand the resources for patients along the palliative care continuum across all care settings.

Dr. Christine Estrada is the Medical Director of Inpatient Hospice at Mountainview Hospital – Infinity Hospice Care in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is board certified in Family Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice with a certificate of added qualification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM). In 2015, Dr. Estrada earned her Hospice Medical Director Certification (HMDC), and she has over 16 years of experience in the hospice and palliative care field and 20 years in medical practice.
Dr. Estrada started her physician advisor career at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2017, when her central advisory role started with throughput optimization. Her activities quickly expanded to include many other duties and roles. She has also proven to be a subject matter expert in clinical operations, strategic planning, and physician engagement and education. In her current role as Physician Advisor at Mountainview Hospital, she is a palliative care physician. She provides a great deal of education about the curative-palliative continuum of health care and end-of-life care. In her dual physician advisor–palliative medicine specialist role, she had developed emergency department-palliative care and ICU-palliative care "fast track" models, taking her position as a throughput champion to another level.
Dr. Estrada received a Master of Public Health (Health Management and Policy concentration) and a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, Texas. She also earned her MBA in Medical Management from UMass at Amherst Isenberg School of Management in Amherst, Massachusetts, in collaboration with the American Association of Physician Leadership (AAPL). In addition to her long-standing membership in the AAPL, Dr. Estrada is also a member of the American College of Physician Advisors (ACPA), the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians (ABQAURP). She received specialty education as a physician advisor at the RAC Summit Physician Advisor and Utilization Review Boot Camp, the National Physician Advisor Conferences, and online ABQAURP courses. Through ABQAURP, Dr. Estrada earned her board certification in Health Care Quality & Management (CHCQM) with the subspecialties of Physician Advisor, Case Management, and Patient Safety/Risk Management. In 2019, the Certifying Commission in Medical Management awarded Dr. Estrada the Certified Physician Executive (CPE) credential. In 2022, she received board certification as a Certified Healthcare Ethics Consultant (HEC-C), a clinical ethics consultant, and Chair of Mountainview's Bioethics Committee.
As for her leadership vision, Dr. Estrada is a strong proponent of organizational innovation, change management, physician engagement and accountability, staff support, customer service, and enhancing the patient and family hospital experience.
