Fariha Shafi, MD, FACP

Dr. Fariha Shafi is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of General Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. She is also the Medical Director of the Medical Assistant Program at University Health, Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Shafi originally hails from Kashmir, a disputed area in the foothills of the Himalayas. The political unrest led her to leave Kashmir at a very young age, growing up between the Middle East and her homeland. After finishing high school, she moved to the Dominican Republic and earned her doctor of medicine degree at the Universidad Technologica De Santiago (UTESA) in Santiago, graduating with honors. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the State University of New York in Buffalo.

Dr. Shafi is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). She is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and is the Chair of the Wellness Committee and the Women in Medicine Committee of the Missouri chapter of the ACP. She works hard to find ways to prevent Physician Burnout and enjoys promoting wellness locally, regionally, and nationally. Much of her professional joy comes from formally mentoring students, residents, and other faculty members. In addition, Dr. Shafi is a Councilor for District 7 of the Missouri State Medical Association and serves on their Public Health Committee. She is also a member of the Kansas City Medical Society Leadership Council and KCMS Wellness Council. She is on the Editorial Board for Missouri Medicine and the leadership council for the Kansas City Medical Society.

Dr. Shafi and her husband, Dr. Abid Bhat, a sleep specialist, have been married for 23 years. She credits him for her ability to take a nap anywhere. Together, they have two beautiful children and two equally beautiful cats! They moved to the Kansas City area 17 years ago, the longest she has managed to stay in one geographical location. Dr. Shafi is very involved with her local community, serving in multiple roles within the Blue Valley School District. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Blue Valley Educational Foundation. Dr. Shafi loves to travel, cook, sing, and read books. She loves to binge-watch Netflix shows.
