Patrick Leary, DO, MS, FAAFP, FACOFP, FACSM, FAOASM


Dr. Patrick F. Leary is the Director of Sports Medicine at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, Pennsylvania. He also is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Sports Medicine at LECOM. Dr. Leary is the lead team physician for the NBA G League Erie BayHawks, Mercyhurst University, and PennWest Edinboro University. Dr. Leary is board certified in Family Medicine, Sports Medicine and Geriatrics by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. He works at the LECOM Wellness and Integrative Health Center. He received a Master of Science in Medical Education from LECOM in 2012.

Dr. Leary is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Leary mentors specialty physicians in China for the IPCEA/ACOFP and in Cologne, Germany, for the AOASM/DIAA. He is the Program Director of the LECOM Sports Medicine Fellowship, which emphasizes the use of MSK diagnostic ultrasound and regenerative injection therapy. Dr. Leary is also a large medical group's Health, Wellness, and Communications Director.

Dr. Leary is a graduate of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bio-Sciences in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the team physician at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, from 1995-2005, where he also did his undergraduate work. During that same time, he was also the medical director of Holy Cross House, a senior living center for retired priests.

Dr. Leary is the recent past president of his specialty college, the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM). He recently was appointed to the sports medicine advisory board of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). He is presently a member of the ACSM Team Physicians Consensus Panel and NCAA Cardiac Task Force.

Dr. Leary has published and researched Vitamin D, ACL Injuries and Prevention, Sports-Related Concussion in Family Practice, athletic pubalgia, concussion in boxing, athletica nervosa, and baby boomer fitness injuries. He presents nationally on Mental Health in Adolescent Sports, Osteopathic Approach to Sports Medicine, and Physician Burnout, along with other sports medicine topics. He has participated in philanthropic medical work in numerous countries (Honduras, Mexico, Qatar, Chile, China, Germany, etc.).

Dr. Leary is married and has four children. He enjoys teaching and traveling along with hunting, fly fishing, and golfing.
