Sharon M. Gordon, DDS, MPH, PhD, earned her dental degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and completed a two-year hospital-based residency program at the Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio prior to joining the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Over her 13-year tenure at NIH, she provided dental care for medically complex patients in NIH’s Clinical Center and earned an MPH in Epidemiology and PhD in Clinical Investigation, both from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Gordon’s expertise centers on the mechanisms of pain and analgesia, with an emphasis on clinical and population-based research. Over the past several years her work has evolved to focus on the evidential basis of pain management highlighting diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic facial pain. Most recently, Dr. Gordon served as a contributor to the most recent Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health and the development of the national Clinical Practice Guidelines for Acute Dental Pain, supported by the American Dental Association and the Food and Drug Administration.
