This presentation will review treating the obtunded adolescent patient that presents to the emergency clinician. The spectrum of disorders that can cause symptoms like clouding of consciousness, confusion, lethargy, and obtundation will be discussed, as well as the risk of suicide. Providing emergency and follow-up care will also be reviewed.

Objectives:
● Discuss and define causes and presentation of obtundation in adolescents
● Examine and critique diagnostic approaches
● Discuss immediate and emergent treatment modalities
● Discuss comprehensive and preventative follow-up care

This program is co-sponsored by the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon (OPSO). Both osteopathic associations are accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.

Dr. Koenig is a board-certified Pediatrician at Physicians' Medical Center in McMinnville, Oregon. He received his Doctor of Osteopathy from Des Moines University, Des Moines, Iowa, in 1989. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Koenig is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Oregon Medical Association. Dr. Koenig is board certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Dr. Koenig was named Physician of the Year by the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon (OPSO) in 2022. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Oregon Medical Association, and the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon.
