Matthew Grounds, DO started his medicine career as an emergency department unit clerk.  Guided by his continued interest in medicine he completed a BS in Biology at Pittsburg State University, emphasizing in pre-medical studies.  He was accepted to KCUMB-COM in 2003 and completed his medical degree in 2007. He matched into the emergency medicine residency at Freeman Health system where he completed his post-doctoral training in June of 2011.  He began his post-residency career with the recovery, rebuilding, and renewing efforts of the medical community for patients following the devastating F-5 Joplin Tornado in May 2011. 

Dr. Grounds continued his education with certifications in Advanced Sigma Black belt and Lean techniques to progress efficiency of emergency medicine care delivery with goals to provide the most efficient highest quality care available. 

He graciously accepted an appointment as a member of teaching faculty for the emergency medicine residency program at Freeman Health System. He has maintained his status with the program in the role of assistant program director as well as being involved with student and resident mentorship programs. 

Dr. Grounds has served as medical director at Freeman West Hospital Emergency department, a level II trauma center with STEMI and Stroke accreditations that serves a 4-state region of more than 500,000 people with nearly 50,000 very high acuity emergency department visits.  He is a physician advisory member of the regional STEMI and Stroke programs for his practice region 

He fiercely defends his time with his family and maintains them and his faith as his highest priorities.  He is an avid gardener and considers himself a 40+ year novice for vertical horticulture.
