Vinaya Sermadevi, MD


Dr. Vinaya Sermadevi is a Staff Physician in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at Mercy Hospital in St Louis, Missouri. She has been with Mercy for over a decade and has served as the Medical Co-Director of their ECMO Program since 2018. Her areas of interest include patient quality and safety and humanizing medicine. She has led the hospital-wide effort to reduce bleeding complications associated with Lovenox dosing in the obese patient population. As a director of the ECMO program, Dr. Sermadevi is credited with developing an emotional debrief process that has been instrumental to the well-being of the ECMO team. In addition to encouraging reflection and experiential learning, the guided debrief process also addressed the emotional support needs of the team, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Sermadevi completed her medical degree at Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute in Chennai, India. She then completed two Internal Medicine Residencies. One was at New York Medical College at Mary Immaculate Hospital/St. John's Queens Hospital and the other at St. Vincent's Hospital & Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Sermadevi then completed a fellowship in Critical Care at St. Louis University Program at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Sermadevi is board certified in Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is also board certified in Critical Care Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography and Neurocritical Care by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties.

Dr. Sermadevi was a finalist in 2022 for the Physician of the Year for Mercy East Clinic in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2013 she was named the Mercy Hospital Research Colloquium winner. She was also the Chief Fellow during her fellowship in Critical Care Medicine. During her residencies, she was named Resident of the Year PGY-1/PGY-2 in 2007 and 2008.

During her free time, Dr. Sermadevi enjoys outreach and mentoring, classical music, writing, reading, cooking, and baking.
