Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor and Chief of Psychiatry at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. He is also a Founding Psychiatry Residency Program Director at Portsmouth Regional Hospital's new GME program affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Dr. Smith is board certified in Psychiatry by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry and is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine.
Dr. Smith worked as the sole psychiatrist in Washington County, Maine, for five years before pursuing other opportunities. He is currently clinically active at the State Psychiatric Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. He serves on the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure and is the Clerkship Director of Psychiatry for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Smith has spoken nationally and at several regional educational programs in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.
Dr. Smith is passionate about teaching and has received several teaching and leadership awards. He is most interested in Psychopharmacology and somatic treatments of psychiatric illness, such as electroconvulsive therapy and newly emerging neuropsychiatric surgical techniques. He is also interested in medical and undergraduate teaching modalities and how pedagogy and andragogy intersect.
Dr. Smith discloses that he received a speaker fee for being a promotional speaker for Otsuka-Lundbeck, Incorporated. He also received a fee for service as an educational advisor for Alkermes, Incorporated.
