Joan Shaffer, MD
Dr. Joan Shaffer is a Critical Care Specialist at Mercy Hospital Washington in Washington, Missouri and at Mercy Clinic Adult Critical Care in St. Louis, Missouri. She has over 40 years of experience in the medical field. She is also the Chairman of Graduate Medical Education at Mercy St. Louis, the Medical Director of Mercy Anheuser Busch Clinical Training Center Simulation, and the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy at St. Louis College of Health Careers in St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from Northeastern Ohio University – College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio, in 1983. Dr. Shaffer completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. She then completed fellowship training in Critical Care through St. Louis University at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Shaffer is board certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Shaffer received the Charles E. Thoele Award for Physician Excellence in 2020. She also received the Family Medicine Residency Teacher of the Year Award in 1997 and 2000. Dr. Shaffer is involved with several medical associations and chairs several committees.
